Connelly Springs, Burke County

From Happy Home Stagecoach Stop to Today's Connelly Springs

In 1838 Colonel William Lewis Connelly built a log home here and kept fresh horses for the stagecoach running between Salisbury and Asheville. The settlement was called Happy Home until a spring on the property, rich in bicarbonate of iron, drew visitors who carried the water off in five-gallon jugs. The Maroney brothers built the Connelly Mineral Springs Hotel beside the railroad in 1886 and 1887, and for a time this was a summer resort for travelers arriving by train. The village incorporated in 1920 and re-incorporated in 1989, and today it is mostly a place where people live and commute out to work.

Two very different housing settings share the Connelly Springs name, and they ask different things of a floor. In town, between US 70 and I-40, homes sit on ordinary Burke County lots with crawlspaces and slabs. To the north, Lake Rhodhiss, the Catawba River reservoir Duke Power created in the mid-1920s, has drawn waterfront subdivisions with Connelly Springs addresses on its south shore. Lake lots bring higher humidity, sloping sites and often walk-out lower levels, which change what we recommend.

At roughly 5 square miles, the town is larger in area than its population suggests, and our crews cover all of it from Hickory using I-40. Whether the job is a hallway in an older house near the old Main Street or an open-plan great room facing the water, we check moisture and flatness before anything else.

Connelly Springs sits roughly 10 miles west of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our recent project gallery has more on what we do across the region.

What We Install on Connelly Springs Floors

Hardwood Away From the Water

Hardwood remains a favorite for living rooms and dining rooms in Connelly Springs, but where the house sits matters. For in-town homes over a dry, vented crawlspace, solid oak or hickory nailed to the subfloor can last for generations. On lake lots near Rhodhiss, where humid air off the water keeps crawlspaces and lower levels damp much of the summer, we lean toward engineered hardwood. Its plywood core holds its shape when moisture rises. Either way, we take moisture readings in the subfloor, let the wood acclimate inside the home, and leave expansion space at the walls so the floor can breathe through Burke County's humid summers and dry, heated winters.

Waterproof LVP for Shoreline Living

Wet feet coming in from the dock, sandy boots and a lower level that opens onto the yard are everyday facts for homes near Lake Rhodhiss. Luxury vinyl plank handles all of that far better than wood or carpet, which is why it is our most common recommendation for lake houses in Connelly Springs. Walk-out basements are usually slabs set into the hillside, so we test the slab for moisture and use an appropriate underlayment before installing. In town, LVP is also a popular upgrade for kitchens, baths and mudrooms. We level the subfloor first so the planks lock tight and stay quiet, and LVT in a stone look is an option for bathrooms.

Carpet in Bedrooms and Bonus Rooms

Carpet still makes sense in bedrooms, upstairs bonus rooms and family rooms where people want something soft underfoot. In a lake house, we generally keep carpet off the walk-out level, where slab moisture and wet traffic from outside can lead to mildew, and put it upstairs instead. For in-town homes, we check the existing subfloor for squeaks and loose panels and fasten them before installation. Pad selection matters: a denser pad on stairs and in hallways keeps carpet from wearing out early. We install broadloom wall to wall with seams placed out of main walking paths, and carpet tile is available for game rooms where a single damaged square can be replaced.

Schools, Churches and Small Businesses

East Burke High School carries a Connelly Springs address, and the area also has churches, offices and small businesses along US 70 that need floors able to take daily traffic. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for classrooms, hallways, sanctuaries, fellowship halls and offices. Because schools and churches cannot easily shut down for a week, we phase work by area or schedule it after hours, on weekends or during breaks. Every commercial installation begins with a slab or subfloor check for moisture and flatness, since adhesives on a damp or uneven base are the most common cause of early failure in commercial flooring.

What Waterfront and In-Town Homeowners in Connelly Springs Should Weigh

Waterfront Air Changes the Rules

Lake Rhodhiss forms the northern side of the area, and houses near the water live with higher humidity through the warm months. Solid hardwood can cup when moisture climbs from a crawlspace or walk-out level. For lake houses, we usually recommend engineered hardwood or LVP on lower floors and save solid wood for upstairs rooms where conditions are more stable. Moisture readings during the estimate tell us which approach fits.

Walk-Out Slabs Need Testing

Many lake lots slope toward the water, so homes are often built with a lower level set into the hill. That slab can wick moisture from the soil behind it. Before installing anything on a walk-out level, we test the slab and choose underlayment and flooring that can tolerate what we measure. Skipping that step is how mildew ends up under carpet or how wood floors buckle.

Older Houses Near Town Center

Connelly Springs was a busy resort and rail village before it became a bedroom community, and some houses in town are considerably older than the lake developments. In older homes, we often find layered flooring, patched subfloor or slight sags between joists. We remove what needs removing, level the surface and fasten loose boards before installing new floors, so new planks or carpet lie flat and quiet.

Homes on the south shore of Lake Rhodhiss face humid air and walk-out slabs. We moisture-test before every install and steer lake houses toward engineered wood or waterproof LVP.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Connelly Springs

Who is the best flooring company in Connelly Springs, NC?

The Foothills Flooring Company is a dependable option for Connelly Springs. We're based in Hickory, with 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Connelly Springs and all of Burke County, and we provide free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706. Our services include hardwood, LVP, carpet and commercial flooring. We're especially used to lake homes on the south side of Lake Rhodhiss, where humidity and walk-out slabs call for moisture testing and the right material choice.

What flooring is best for a Connelly Springs waterfront house?

For most lake homes in Connelly Springs, we recommend waterproof luxury vinyl plank on the main and walk-out levels, because it shrugs off wet feet, sand and humidity. If you want real wood, engineered hardwood handles moisture swings better than solid boards. Carpet is best kept to upstairs bedrooms. We test the slab and subfloor for moisture before recommending a final choice. For homes that are rented out seasonally, a thicker wear layer on the LVP helps it hold up to heavier turnover and luggage.

Do you install over walk-out basement slabs?

Yes. Walk-out levels are common on sloping lots near the lake. Because a slab set into a hillside can draw moisture from the soil, we test the slab before installing. Depending on the readings, we may recommend a moisture barrier, a specific underlayment or a floating LVP floor. That prep is spelled out in your written estimate. We also check where the slab meets the exterior door, since that threshold sees the most water and grit coming in from the yard.

How do you get to Connelly Springs from your shop?

Our crews travel west on I-40, which runs along the southern edge of Connelly Springs, or along US 70, which passes through town. Lake-side subdivisions to the north are reached from local roads off those routes. It's a regular part of our Burke County service area, and travel doesn't change how we schedule measurements or installations. When you call, let us know whether you're in town or on the lake side so we can plan the visit.

Can you replace flooring in a school or church in the Connelly Springs area?

Yes. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for schools, churches, offices and small businesses. Work can be phased area by area or scheduled after hours, on weekends or during breaks so classes and services continue. We check the slab or subfloor for moisture and flatness before any glue-down installation. For gyms, cafeterias and kitchens, resilient sheet vinyl is often the easiest surface for custodial staff to keep clean.

Is it worth refinishing old floors in a Connelly Springs house?

Sometimes. Some homes near the old town center are older than the lake developments, and there may be original wood under carpet or vinyl. If the boards are thick enough and sound, keeping them can make sense. If they're thin, damaged or uneven, we usually recommend new hardwood or LVP over a properly prepared subfloor. We'll inspect during the free estimate visit and explain the options plainly, including what each path would involve in prep work.

How much does new flooring cost in Connelly Springs, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Burke County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Connelly Springs project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
