Morganton, Burke County

Morganton Floors, From Victorian Parlors to the Riverfront

Morganton started as Morgansborough and took its shorter name in 1784, honoring General Daniel Morgan. As the seat of Burke County it collected courthouses, churches and a solid residential core early. The North Green Street and Bouchelle Street historic district holds homes built from about 1876 through 1935, from large Victorian houses to Craftsman bungalows on Bouchelle and Patterson streets. Houses of that age often have original heart pine or oak worth saving, along with joists and subfloors that have settled over a century. Refinishing, patching and careful leveling matter more there than the product we put down.

The twentieth century brought furniture and hosiery. Drexel bought a Morganton plant in 1923, the Garrou-Morganton hosiery mill on Lenoir Street is now on the National Register, and state institutions like Broughton Hospital and the North Carolina School for the Deaf became major employers. When textile and furniture work left the region starting in the 1990s, the city shifted toward other manufacturing, and the housing that grew up around all of it spans well over a century, from those historic districts to much newer homes on the edges of town.

Geography matters too. Morganton sits at about 1,175 feet in the foothills along the Catawba River, with the Catawba River Greenway tracing the water for nearly four miles. Lots near the river and its creeks can hold moisture in crawlspaces, especially after a wet stretch of weather. We moisture-test before hardwood goes down and lean toward LVP over slabs or in basements that feel damp.

Morganton sits roughly 21 miles west of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our main site has more on what we do across the region.

Hardwood, Vinyl, Carpet and Commercial Floors in Morganton

Hardwood, new and restored

Plenty of Morganton's older homes, especially around North Green Street, were built when wood floors were standard. Before recommending new boards, we look at what you already have. Original oak or pine with enough wear layer left may only need repairs and a refinish, and new hardwood can be woven into missing sections. When a room needs a fresh floor, we check joists and subfloor for the sagging and squeaks common in houses that have stood since the late 1800s, then acclimate the new wood in the house. Solid hardwood suits most above-grade rooms here; engineered hardwood is the safer pick over a slab or in a lower level close to the Catawba.

Luxury vinyl for busy households

Plenty of Morganton homes, older and newer alike, still have builder carpet or worn sheet vinyl in kitchens and baths. Luxury vinyl plank and tile replace both with a waterproof surface that handles kids, pets and muddy shoes coming in from the Greenway. Vinyl is only as good as the floor beneath it, so we check for dips, old seams and crawlspace moisture first, and we level where the subfloor needs it. In homes on low ground near the river or its creeks, we recommend LVP for basements and lower levels, where solid wood would be at risk from seasonal dampness.

Carpet and stair runners

Carpet is still the comfortable choice for bedrooms, dens and basements in Morganton, a city tucked into the foothills of the Blue Ridge where winter mornings can be cold underfoot. We install broadloom carpet with a pad matched to the room's use, and carpet tile for playrooms or finished basements where a section may need replacing someday. Older Bouchelle Street-era bungalows can have narrow, worn stairs that need extra care with each tread. We measure stairs and every room at the free on-site visit and give you a written estimate with the pad and transitions spelled out, not surprises on install day.

Floors for offices, schools and state campuses

Morganton's economy includes Broughton Hospital, the North Carolina School for the Deaf, the Morganton campus of the NC School of Science and Mathematics, Western Piedmont Community College, and a downtown of brick commercial buildings dating from about 1889 to 1940. Those spaces need floors that clean easily and hold up to heavy foot traffic. We install commercial LVP, carpet tile and resilient sheet vinyl, choosing between them based on traffic, cleaning routines and rolling loads, for offices, medical and dental practices, churches, classrooms and retail. Work can be phased by wing or room, or scheduled after hours and on weekends so patients, students and customers are not disrupted.

What Morganton Homeowners Should Check Before New Floors

Century-old homes need structural checks

Morganton's North Green Street and Bouchelle Street historic district has homes built from about 1876 to 1935. Over that much time, joists sag and plank subfloors loosen, and a new floor laid over the problem will squeak or crack. We inspect from above and, when we can, from the crawlspace, then fix what needs fixing before installing. Sometimes the right answer is restoring the original wood instead of covering it.

River lots can mean damp crawlspaces

The Catawba River runs right along Morganton, and low-lying lots near it and its creeks can hold moisture beneath the house. Wood floors over a damp crawlspace cup and swell. We take moisture readings in the subfloor and the new material, recommend vapor barriers or ventilation fixes when the numbers call for it, and steer toward LVP or engineered hardwood when the space below stays humid. A floor that matches the conditions under the house will outlast a prettier one that does not.

Builder-grade upgrades pay off

With I-40, US 64, US 70, NC 18 and NC 181 all crossing the city, Morganton's newer homes are spread across many corners of town, and many came with builder-grade carpet and vinyl. Replacing those with LVP in main living areas and better carpet in bedrooms is a practical upgrade that holds up to everyday wear. We pull the old flooring, check the subfloor, and plan transitions so the new floors line up across rooms.

We Know Burke County
Morganton sits along the Catawba River, and low lots near it and its creeks can keep crawlspaces damp. We moisture-test crawlspaces and slabs before choosing between hardwood and waterproof LVP.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Morganton

The Foothills Flooring Company is a flooring contractor based in Hickory with 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Morganton and all of Burke County, and every job starts with a free on-site estimate. Call (828) 471-7706. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Morganton is a straight drive west of Hickory on I-40, and with five interstate exits in city limits, we reach most neighborhoods quickly.

Can you refinish original floors in an older Morganton home?

Often, yes. Many homes in the North Green Street and Bouchelle Street area date from the late 1800s and early 1900s and still have original hardwood underneath carpet or vinyl. If the boards have enough wear layer left, repairing and refinishing can bring them back. Where boards are missing or damaged, we can weave in matching new hardwood. We will tell you honestly which approach makes sense after seeing the floor.

What flooring do you recommend for a home near the Catawba River?

For upper floors, hardwood is usually fine once we have checked moisture. For basements, slabs and lower levels on low ground near the river or its creeks, we generally recommend luxury vinyl plank because it is waterproof and stays stable when the air is damp. Engineered hardwood is a good middle option if you want real wood in a lower room. We test moisture before recommending anything.

Do you work with medical offices and schools in Morganton?

Yes. Morganton has a large concentration of healthcare and education, including Broughton Hospital, the NC School for the Deaf, NC School of Science and Mathematics and Western Piedmont Community College, along with many private practices and churches. We install commercial LVP, carpet tile and resilient sheet vinyl, and we can phase work or schedule it after hours and on weekends to keep your space running.

Can you replace flooring in a downtown Morganton storefront?

Yes. Downtown Morganton is a National Register historic district with commercial buildings built from about 1889 to 1940, and older floors there may have several layers stacked up. We check the layers and the subfloor first, then recommend commercial LVP, carpet tile or sheet vinyl based on your traffic. Evening and weekend scheduling helps keep your doors open, and we can split a larger space into phases so part of the store stays usable while the rest is finished. If the building has upstairs space that needs work as well, we can measure it on the same visit.

How many days does a typical home flooring project take?

It depends on the size, the material and how much prep the subfloor needs. A bedroom of carpet can be done quickly, while a whole first floor of hardwood needs time for the wood to acclimate in the house before installation. Older Morganton homes, particularly those from the 1870s through the 1930s near North Green Street, may need extra leveling or joist repair before new flooring goes in. We give you a schedule along with the written estimate after the free on-site measurement.

How much does new flooring cost in Morganton, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Burke County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Morganton project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
