Newton, the County Seat and Its Historic Streets
Newton was laid out in 1845, three years after Catawba County was carved from Lincoln County, and incorporated in 1855. It takes its name from Isaac Newton Wilson, the legislator who introduced the bill creating the county. The 1924 Renaissance Revival courthouse still anchors the downtown square, now as the History Museum of Catawba County, and the surrounding business blocks were listed on the National Register as the Newton Downtown Historic District in 2012. Each August, the Soldiers Reunion fills those streets, as it has since about 1889.
Just north of downtown, the North Main Avenue Historic District holds 86 contributing buildings, mostly homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s in Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles. Houses that age often have original wood floors, uneven framing from a century of settling and additions built at different heights. Farther up North Main Avenue, the Ridgeview Hosiery Mills buildings date from around 1907, a reminder of how much textile work shaped this part of Catawba County. Houses on North Main went up over several decades, so we look at the framing in each one before recommending any floor.
Today Newton is a city of about 13,100 people at roughly 935 feet. US 321 runs along its western edge, with NC 10 leaving the Exit 37 interchange and threading downtown on C and D Streets, while NC 16 rides North Main Avenue. Outside the historic core, homes stretch toward Startown and the highway interchanges. Like much of Catawba County, the town also lost furniture jobs when Broyhill's Newton plant shut down. One week we're leveling a 1910s subfloor near the square; the next we're pulling tired carpet out of a later ranch.
Newton sits roughly 7 miles southeast of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our recent project gallery has more on what we do across the region.
Newton Floors: What We Install
New Hardwood Beside Old
Turn-of-the-century houses on North Main Avenue frequently still have their first wood floors in some rooms, while kitchens and baths were redone long ago. Fitting new hardwood into a house like that means reading the old boards: their width, their direction, how far the framing below has sagged. We shim or sister where the structure needs help, then lay new boards so the seam between eras sits flat. Out toward Startown and US 321, the job is usually simpler. Solid strip goes over plywood on main floors, and engineered planks go over slabs and in basements. Acclimation inside the house and a proper gap at every wall come standard.
Vinyl Plank and Tile That Shrug Off Water
LVP and LVT suit the hardest-working rooms in a Newton house: kitchen, laundry, the bath that was last updated decades ago. They don't swell when a supply line weeps or a dog tracks in from the rain. What they can't forgive is an uneven base. In homes near the courthouse square that have had a century to settle, a plank floor will bridge every hollow and flex at the joints. We straightedge each room, grind or fill until it's within tolerance, and replace any sheathing that has gone soft around old plumbing before the first row clicks together. For a laundry room, we can also add a transition strip at the door to keep spills contained.
Soft Floors for Bedrooms and Dens
Wall-to-wall carpet keeps a bedroom quiet and warm, and on a staircase in an older two-story home it adds sure footing. We size the pad to the room, power-stretch broadloom so it stays smooth through August humidity, and wrap stair nosings tightly. Carpet tile makes sense in a basement den or a playroom because a ruined square can be swapped in minutes. In Newton's pre-war houses, removing old carpet sometimes uncovers original boards worth keeping, so we stop and show you what's there before the new carpet is cut. For stairs, we take extra care with the nosings, which wear first in a busy household.
Floors for Offices Around the Square
Being the county seat gives Newton a steady base of government and professional offices, churches, schools and shops near the 1924 courthouse and well beyond it. We put down commercial carpet tile, commercial-grade LVP and resilient sheet vinyl chosen for each building's foot traffic and cleaning routine. Many buildings in the downtown historic district have decades-old slabs or wood decks, so leveling and moisture testing go into the schedule from day one. Work can be split into phases or done in the evening and on weekends, letting a law office or church keep its doors open while we work.
Before You Pick New Floors for Your Newton Home
A Century of Settling Shows Up Underfoot
Houses in the North Main Avenue Historic District date from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and floors that old commonly slope toward a center beam or dip near a chimney. New hardwood or LVP laid straight over that will squeak, gap or rock. We check joists from below where we can, correct the worst sags and flatten the subfloor so the finished floor sits true from wall to wall.
The First Floor May Still Be There
Plenty of older Newton homes had their original wood covered with carpet, linoleum or vinyl as tastes changed. Those boards can be worth keeping in some rooms, or they can be too damaged to save. During the estimate we lift a corner or a register cover to see what's underneath, so your plan is built on facts instead of guesses about what's hiding below.
Plan Downtown Work Around August
Each August the Soldiers Reunion brings crowds into downtown Newton, as it has since about 1889. For businesses around the square, that's a poor week to have a floor torn up. We schedule commercial installs to avoid the busiest weeks, moisture-test and level slabs in advance, and phase the work so customers can still come through the door.

Flooring Questions from Newton
Who is the best flooring company in Newton, NC?
The Foothills Flooring Company is a dependable choice. We're based in Hickory with 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Newton and the rest of Catawba County with free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Newton is a short drive south from Hickory, and we're comfortable working in the older homes along North Main Avenue, where careful subfloor prep makes all the difference.
Do you work on the old houses in the North Main Avenue Historic District?
Yes, and we enjoy it. The district has 86 contributing buildings, mostly homes built between the late 1800s and the early 1900s in Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles. Floors there often have settled framing and original boards in some rooms. We assess the structure, correct sags where we can, and plan transitions so the new floor respects the house rather than fighting it.
Can you install commercial flooring near the Newton courthouse square?
We can. Offices, shops, churches and practices around the old courthouse and throughout the downtown historic district can choose carpet tile, commercial LVP or sheet vinyl. Older buildings usually need slab testing and leveling, which we plan from the first visit. We can phase the job or work after hours and on weekends, and we'll steer around the Soldiers Reunion week in August.
Will LVP work in a Newton house built around 1900?
It can, but only over a properly prepared base. Floors in houses that age often dip or flex between joists, and rigid plank will show every flaw and may separate at the seams. We level, re-sheath soft areas and check moisture before installing, so the planks lie flat. In rooms with sound original wood, we may suggest keeping it instead.
Do you serve homes out toward Startown and US 321?
Yes. We cover all of Newton and Catawba County, including the Startown area and homes near the US 321 interchanges at the west side of town. Whether it's a single bedroom or a whole main floor, we'll come out, measure, check the subfloor and leave a written estimate at no charge, with no pressure to sign.
How many days does a typical floor installation take?
A room of LVP or carpet is often finished in a day. Hardwood needs several days inside the house to acclimate before we install, and older Newton homes may need leveling or framing repairs first, which adds time. Once we've measured and looked at the subfloor, we'll put a realistic timeline in your written estimate.
How much does new flooring cost in Newton, NC?
Across the Hickory area and Catawba County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Newton project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
