Conover, Catawba County

Conover, a Furniture Town at the Center of the County

Conover sits near the center of Catawba County, and it began where two rail lines met in a 'Y.' The settlement was first called Wye Town, was chartered in 1876, and has been an incorporated city since 1877. Concordia College operated here from 1877 until 1933. The Bolick Historic District along First Avenue South, listed on the National Register in 1990, preserves Colonial Revival and Craftsman buildings from that era, and older homes like these often carry decades of settling in their floor framing. The George Huffman Farm, also on the National Register, preserves a piece of the area's rural past.

Furniture shaped the town more than anything. Broyhill bought the bankrupt Conover Furniture plant in 1941, and when Broyhill's Conover factory closed in 2005, the city bought the 26-acre site and turned it into Conover Station, now home to the library and a community room. Lee Industries and Vanguard Furniture are still headquartered here, and local plants have also turned out cabinets, doors, gloves and socks. In a town this close to the furniture trade, people notice wood quality and finish, so we explain how each floor is built and what it needs underneath to last.

Today Conover is a city of about 8,400 people spread over roughly 10.9 square miles, with I-40 running through it and exits at 128, 130 and 132. NC 16 Business follows Main and First Avenue through downtown, and the Rock Barn golf community has been part of the city since the late 1960s. That range of places means one week we're flattening a century-old subfloor near downtown and the next we're pulling carpet off newer plywood. Across Catawba County, we plan each job around what we actually find under the old floor.

Conover sits roughly 6 miles east of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our full list of services has more on what we do across the region.

Flooring Services

Conover Flooring We Install

Hardwood for Older and Newer Homes

Around First Avenue South and the Bolick Historic District, whose buildings go back to 1883, original wood floors turn up often, and new hardwood frequently has to meet boards laid generations ago. We check joists and subfloor so the two meet flat, match board width where possible and plan where the seam between old and new will land. Near Rock Barn or off the I-40 exits, we install solid hardwood over plywood decks or engineered hardwood over slabs and in basements. Every order acclimates inside the house first, and we leave expansion space at the walls so seasonal humidity doesn't cause buckling or gaps.

LVP and LVT

Luxury vinyl plank and tile fit the way a lot of Conover households live: kids, pets and a back door that opens onto the yard. LVP and LVT are waterproof, resist scratches and stand up to busy kitchens and entryways, which makes them a common replacement when tired carpet comes out. Before installation, we check the subfloor for flatness and moisture, then level as needed so the planks lock tight and stay that way. In older homes near downtown, that prep step matters even more, since decades of settling can leave dips that a rigid plank will reveal the first week.

Carpet and Carpet Tile

For bedrooms, stairs and family rooms, carpet is still a comfortable choice in a Conover home, and fittingly so in a town that has also manufactured textiles like socks and gloves. We install broadloom and carpet tile over a pad selected for the room and its traffic, power-stretching it so it stays smooth over time. Carpet tile is a smart pick for basements and kids' rooms, since individual tiles can be replaced. When we take up old carpet, we inspect the subfloor and fix squeaks or soft spots before the new material goes in, so the finished room feels solid underfoot.

Commercial Floors for Conover Businesses

Catawba County has more than 425 manufacturers, and Conover holds a good share of them along with shops and offices on Conover Boulevard and near the I-40 exits. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for offices, medical and dental practices, schools, churches and retail, matching each product to foot traffic and cleaning routines. Office areas inside plants and showrooms need floors that hold up to heavy rolling loads and constant use. We test and prep slabs before installation, and we can phase the job or work after hours and on weekends so your operation keeps running.

Thinking About New Floors in Conover? Read This First

Older Subfloors Need Leveling

Conover has been an incorporated city since 1877, and homes near downtown and the Bolick Historic District may have framing that has settled over generations. Rigid products like LVP and engineered hardwood need a flat base, or their joints can separate and click under foot. We check flatness with a long straightedge, then sand high spots and fill low ones before any new floor goes down.

Look Past the Old Carpet

In Conover's newer neighborhoods and around Rock Barn, the original wall-to-wall carpet is often what owners want gone first. Pulling it up can reveal squeaky plywood, loose fasteners or stains that have soaked into the subfloor. We remove the carpet and pad, screw down anything loose, seal or replace damaged sections and only then install LVP or hardwood, so the upgrade isn't undermined by what was hiding underneath.

Plan Commercial Work Around Production

With furniture makers like Lee Industries and Vanguard headquartered in Conover, plus many suppliers nearby, office and showroom floors often can't be shut down for a week. We map out commercial installs in phases or schedule them after hours and on weekends. Slab moisture testing and leveling are built into the plan, so there are no surprises once the crew starts.

We Know Catawba County
Conover's homes range from older houses near the 1990-listed Bolick Historic District to newer builds around Rock Barn. Each era brings its own subfloor problems, so we check flatness and moisture on every job before recommending a floor.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Conover

Who is the best flooring company in Conover, NC?

The Foothills Flooring Company is a solid choice. We're based in Hickory and have 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Conover and all of Catawba County with free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Conover sits right next door to Hickory on I-40, so getting to your home or business for a measurement or follow-up visit is a short trip.

Can you install hardwood next to original floors in an older Conover home?

Yes. Older homes near First Avenue South and the Bolick Historic District often have original wood floors. We match board width and direction where possible and check the subfloor so the new section lines up flat with the old. If the old floor isn't sound enough to tie into, we'll tell you plainly and talk through installing new hardwood across the whole room instead.

Is LVP a good upgrade from carpet in a newer Conover home?

For most kitchens, living areas and entryways, yes. LVP is waterproof, durable and easy to clean. In newer Conover homes the subfloor is usually in decent shape, but carpet can hide squeaks, loose panels and old pet stains. We pull the carpet, check flatness and moisture, and fix what we find before installing, so the planks stay tight for years.

Do you install flooring for businesses along Conover Boulevard?

We do. Shops, offices, practices, churches and schools along Conover Boulevard and near the I-40 exits can choose commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP or sheet vinyl. Jobs can be phased by area or scheduled after hours and on weekends to keep your business running. Slab prep and moisture testing are planned from the first visit, so the crew isn't surprised once the old floor comes up.

Do you serve homes near Rock Barn in Conover?

Yes. We serve the Rock Barn area and every part of Conover and Catawba County. Whether you're updating a single room or the whole house, we'll come out, measure, check the subfloor and give you a written estimate at no cost. For larger homes, we can also plan the work in stages so you keep using part of the house during the install.

How many days does a flooring project take?

It depends on the size and the product. One room of LVP or carpet is often a single day. Hardwood takes longer because it needs to acclimate inside the house before installation, and older Conover homes may need leveling first. We'll lay out the timeline in your written estimate after we see the space, so you can plan around it.

How much does new flooring cost in Conover, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Catawba County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Conover project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
