Taylorsville, Alexander County

Taylorsville, the County Seat at the Foot of the Brushies

Taylorsville was laid out in 1847, the same year the legislature created Alexander County, on donated land near the county's center. Lots were auctioned that August to pay for a courthouse and jail, and the town grew outward from there. Historians still argue over whether it honors Zachary Taylor or the North Carolina agriculturist John Louis Taylor. A state survey finished in 2023 documented roughly 130 buildings built before 1975 inside town limits, and the blocks around Main Avenue joined the National Register in 2024 as the Downtown Taylorsville Historic District. That age shows up underfoot: framing that has settled over the decades, and rooms where an older floor sits under later carpet or vinyl.

The local economy leaned on textiles first, then furniture, which overtook textiles after World War II, with poultry and dairy farming alongside. The 2023 closing of the Mitchell Gold-Bob Williams plant, which cost more than 400 jobs, showed how much of the town has been tied to making furniture. We expect close questions about wood and workmanship here, so we walk you through the subfloor, the transitions and the layout before anyone settles on a product.

At about 1,175 feet, with the Brushy Mountains rising north of town and orchards lining NC 16, Taylorsville goes from sticky summers to dry, heated rooms every winter. That swing pushes and pulls on solid wood. Wherever we work in Alexander County, we read moisture in both the boards and the subfloor, let material acclimate inside the house, and leave proper room for movement at the walls. East of town, the old Rocky Face quarry, worked from 1922 into the early 1940s, has been a county park since 2012. For any basement or slab room in the area, we test for moisture before we commit to wood.

Taylorsville sits roughly 15 miles northeast of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our recent project gallery has more on what we do across the region.

Floors We Install for Taylorsville Homes and Businesses

Solid and Engineered Hardwood

Houses near the downtown historic district often carry the floor history of several owners, and some still have original boards under later coverings. Before new hardwood goes in, we check the joists and subfloor for sag or loose sheathing and flatten what needs it so the boards lie tight. Solid hardwood suits most main-level rooms. For a finished basement or a slab addition, engineered hardwood is the steadier pick because its layered core shrugs off the seasonal humidity swing better than a solid board. Every delivery sits in the house to acclimate, and we test moisture first, so the new floor isn't fighting the house from the day it's installed. We also plan board direction around the joists and the main sightlines of the room.

Waterproof LVP and LVT

Kitchens, mudrooms and laundry rooms take the hardest use, and that's where luxury vinyl plank and tile earn their place. In a town whose economy grew partly from poultry and dairy farms, plenty of households still come in from outdoor work, and a waterproof wear layer handles boots, pets and spills without complaint. Older Taylorsville houses can have dips and humps in the subfloor, so we level before installing; an unflattened subfloor is the usual reason click-lock joints gap or peak a year later. A matte, textured plank hides dust well and keeps its looks in the rooms that see the most traffic from the yard. LVT in a tile format works nicely in bathrooms where grout lines used to crack.

Carpet for Bedrooms and Stairs

Bedrooms, stairways and upstairs bonus rooms are where carpet keeps its appeal, especially in a foothills town where winter mornings at about 1,175 feet run cold. We install broadloom over a pad chosen for the room, power-stretch it so it won't ripple within a year, and keep seams away from the main walking path. For a basement rec room on a slab, carpet tile deserves a look, since one ruined tile comes up without disturbing its neighbors. If you're replacing old carpet in a house near Main Avenue, we check what's underneath first, because the condition of the subfloor sometimes changes the plan and the price of the job.

Commercial Floors on Main Avenue and Beyond

The Downtown Taylorsville Historic District joined the National Register in 2024, and the storefronts, offices and churches along Main Avenue need floors that look right and hold up. For offices, medical and dental practices, schools, churches and retail shops, we put down carpet tile built for commercial traffic, commercial-grade LVP or resilient sheet vinyl. Older commercial buildings rarely have perfectly flat slabs or decks, so substrate prep is built into the plan rather than discovered halfway through. Work can be phased room by room or scheduled after hours and on weekends, letting a business in the county seat keep serving customers until the work is done.

What Taylorsville Homeowners Should Weigh Before New Floors

An Older Floor May Be Hiding Underneath

A 2023 state survey counted roughly 130 pre-1975 buildings in Taylorsville. Houses that age have often been re-floored more than once, sometimes by laying new material right over old. Each layer raises the floor height, throws off door clearances and can hide soft spots. Before installing, we open a small test area to see what's below and how many layers there are, which tells us whether to tear out, level or build on what's already there.

Plan for Seasonal Wood Movement

Taylorsville sits about 1,175 feet up with the Brushy Mountains just to the north. Humid summers and dry, heated winters make solid wood swell and shrink, and seasonal gaps between boards follow. We acclimate hardwood inside the home, keep the correct expansion gap at the walls and recommend engineered hardwood over slabs and in basements. Running a humidifier in winter also helps any wood floor stay tight.

Downtown Buildings Need Extra Prep

Many commercial buildings along Main Avenue have stood for decades, which is why the area qualified for the National Register in 2024. Old slabs and wood decks under storefronts are seldom level, and adhesives fail on dusty or damp substrates. We moisture-test slabs, grind or patch high and low spots, and choose commercial products rated for the traffic before the first tile goes down.

We Know Alexander County
Taylorsville has a large share of houses built before 1975 around its historic downtown, and decades of settling often show up as uneven subfloors. We check flatness and moisture before we recommend a product, not after.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Taylorsville

Who is the best flooring company in Taylorsville, NC?

The Foothills Flooring Company is a strong choice. We're based in Hickory, with 15 years in the trade and hundreds of finished residential and commercial projects. We serve Taylorsville and all of Alexander County, and every job starts with a free on-site estimate. Call (828) 471-7706 to set one up. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Getting to Taylorsville is a straight run up NC 16 from Hickory, across the Catawba River beside Oxford Dam, so measuring and follow-up visits are easy to schedule.

Is LVP a good replacement for carpet in an older Taylorsville house?

Usually, yes, as long as the subfloor is prepared. Many homes near downtown Taylorsville predate 1975, and older framing often has dips or soft spots that carpet padding used to hide. Rigid plank will telegraph those flaws, and its joints can separate if the floor flexes. We pull back a section of carpet, check the subfloor, then level or replace sheathing where needed before the plank goes down.

Do you install commercial flooring in downtown Taylorsville?

We do. Offices, shops, churches and practices along Main Avenue can choose carpet tile, commercial LVP or sheet vinyl. Because the downtown historic district is made up of older buildings, we test slab moisture and flatness before ordering anything. We can phase the work or schedule it after hours and on weekends so you stay open, and we'll lay out the sequence with you in advance.

Will you come out to homes north of town toward the Brushy Mountains?

Yes. We serve all of Alexander County, including the orchard country along NC 16 north of Taylorsville. Homes out that way may sit over crawlspaces or on sloping lots, so we check crawlspace moisture and slab conditions before recommending hardwood. The on-site measurement and written estimate are free wherever you are in the county, from the Brushies down to Lake Hickory.

Should I choose solid or engineered hardwood for my Taylorsville home?

It depends on the room. Solid boards work well over a wood subfloor on the main level. For basements, slab additions or rooms over a damp crawlspace, engineered hardwood handles moisture changes better. With Taylorsville's humid summers and dry, heated winters, we acclimate either type inside the house and test moisture before install, then leave the right gap at the walls.

How many days does a flooring installation take?

A single room of LVP or carpet is often done in a day. Whole-house hardwood takes longer, since the boards need several days to acclimate before installation and any leveling has to happen first. We'll give you a timeline with your written estimate after we've measured and seen the subfloor, so you can plan furniture moves and daily life around it.

How much does new flooring cost in Taylorsville, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Alexander County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Taylorsville project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
