New Floors for Hickory-Area Homes

New flooring changes how a home looks, feels and sounds more than almost any other project. It is also one of the few upgrades you touch every single day, which is why the details matter: how the planks line up through a doorway, whether the floor feels solid underfoot, how cleanly it meets the cabinets, the stairs and the next room. As a flooring contractor based in Hickory, NC, The Foothills Flooring Company installs residential flooring throughout Hickory and the surrounding Foothills, and every project gets the same attention whether it is a single bedroom or an entire main floor.

We work in all kinds of homes — older houses in Hickory's established neighborhoods with original hardwood and uneven subfloors, newer homes in Conover, Newton and Mountain View that are ready to trade builder-grade carpet for something more durable, lake houses around Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss, and rental properties that need a floor that can take years of tenants. With 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed projects, we have seen most of the surprises that hide under old flooring, and we plan for them before they turn into change orders.

This page walks through the residential flooring we install, how to choose the right floor for each room, what proper preparation involves, and what to expect from your free estimate through the final walkthrough. If you would rather talk it through, call (828) 471-7706 or head back to the home page to see recent projects.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood Flooring Installation in Hickory, NC

Nothing else feels quite like real wood. Hardwood flooring brings warmth, natural grain and a quiet, solid feel to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and stairs, and it is one of the few floors that can be sanded and refinished over its lifetime rather than replaced. For many homeowners in the Hickory area it is the floor they have always wanted, and it remains one of the upgrades buyers notice first.

Solid vs. engineered hardwood flooring

Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood. It is the traditional choice for main living areas on wood subfloors, and its thickness allows it to be refinished several times over the decades. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer bonded to a stable layered core. Because that core resists expanding and shrinking, engineered wood handles changes in humidity better and can go in some places solid wood should not, such as over certain slab subfloors. We will explain the trade-offs for your home and help you choose the right construction, species, width and finish.

Why acclimation matters for hardwood flooring in the Foothills

Wood moves with moisture. Western North Carolina sees humid summers and drier heated winters, and many homes in Catawba, Caldwell and Burke Counties sit over crawlspaces that hold moisture. Hardwood installed without attention to those conditions can cup, gap or buckle. Before installing, we check the subfloor and the space, allow the flooring to acclimate as the product requires, and leave proper expansion space at the walls. These steps are invisible once the trim is on, and they are a big part of why a wood floor still looks right years later.

Stairs, transitions and finishing details

A hardwood floor is only as good as its edges. We plan where each run of boards will start and end, how the floor will meet tile, carpet or LVP in the next room, and how stair treads and nosings will be handled, so the finished floor reads as one continuous design rather than a series of patches.

Luxury Vinyl Plank & Tile

LVP Flooring Installation (Luxury Vinyl Plank)

Luxury vinyl plank — usually called LVP flooring — has become the most requested residential floor we install in Hickory, and for good reason. Modern LVP carries convincing wood and stone looks, it is highly water-resistant, and it stands up well to pets, kids and heavy foot traffic. It is a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and basements — rooms where solid hardwood is not a good fit — and it is a popular way to run one continuous floor through an entire main level.

What separates good LVP flooring from a disappointing floor

Not all vinyl plank is the same. The wear layer — the clear top surface — largely determines how well a floor resists scratches and scuffs, and thicker wear layers suit busier homes. The core matters too: rigid-core planks bridge small imperfections better and feel more solid underfoot, while flexible products need a flatter subfloor. Plank length and width, the realism of the print, and whether an attached underlayment is included all affect how the finished floor looks and sounds. We help you compare products on those points rather than on the photo on the box.

LVP flooring still needs a flat subfloor

The most common reason vinyl plank fails is the floor underneath it. Click-lock planks laid over dips and humps can flex at the joints, separate, or develop a hollow, clicking feel. We check flatness across the room and correct high and low spots before installation, so the locking joints stay tight and the floor feels solid from wall to wall.

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT)

The same technology comes in tile formats with stone and ceramic looks. LVT is warmer and softer underfoot than real tile, has no grout lines to scrub, and works well in bathrooms, entries and laundry rooms.

Carpet

Carpet for Bedrooms & Family Rooms

Hard surfaces have taken over kitchens and living areas, but carpet still earns its place in bedrooms, bonus rooms, basements used as family rooms, and upstairs spaces where comfort and quiet matter. It is warm underfoot, it softens sound between floors, and it is often the most budget-friendly way to refresh several rooms at once.

A carpet installation is only as good as the pad underneath and the way the seams are placed. We help you choose a carpet and cushion suited to how the room is used, plan seams so they fall out of the main traffic path and away from the eye, and stretch the carpet properly so it lies flat rather than rippling a year later. Many homeowners combine carpet in the bedrooms with LVP or hardwood in the rest of the house, and we install and transition between them as one project.

Room by Room

Choosing the Right Floor for Each Room

There is rarely a single right answer for a whole house. The best results usually come from matching each floor to how the room is actually used. Here is how we typically talk it through with homeowners:

RoomCommon choicesWhat to think about
Living & dining roomsHardwood, LVPThe look you want to live with; continuity with adjoining rooms
KitchenLVP, engineered hardwoodSpills, dropped dishes, how the floor meets cabinets and appliances
Bathrooms & laundryLVP, LVTWater exposure; transitions at tubs, toilets and doorways
BedroomsCarpet, hardwood, LVPComfort, noise between floors, rugs
BasementsLVP, carpetSlab moisture; whether the space is finished and heated
StairsHardwood, carpetSafety, nosings, matching the floors above and below
RentalsLVPDurability between tenants and easy repairs

Pets, young children, how much natural light a room gets, and how long you plan to stay in the home all shift the recommendation. During your free estimate we walk through each room with you and give you straight advice, including when the less expensive option is the better one.

Preparation

Subfloor Prep: The Part You Never See

Squeaks, soft spots, gaps between boards, separating vinyl planks and lumps under carpet almost always trace back to what is underneath. That is why every residential project starts below the surface. Before new flooring goes down we look at:

  • Flatness — high spots and dips that would cause click-lock joints to flex or hardwood to rock.
  • Structure — loose or squeaking subfloor panels that should be secured before they are covered.
  • Moisture — especially over crawlspaces and slab subfloors, where it affects wood and some adhesives.
  • Existing flooring — whether the old floor needs to come up, or whether the new one can go over it.
  • Heights and transitions — how the new floor will meet doors, stairs, tile and adjoining rooms.

This is where an experienced flooring contractor earns their keep. Anything that needs attention is spelled out in your written estimate, so there are no surprises once the old floor comes up.

Questions

Residential Flooring FAQs

Is LVP or hardwood better for my home?

Hardwood offers natural character, can be refinished and adds lasting value, which makes it a strong choice for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. LVP is the better fit where water, heavy wear or pets are a concern, such as kitchens, baths and basements. Many homes use both, and we will recommend the right floor room by room.

Can new flooring go over my existing floor?

Sometimes. It depends on what is there now, how flat and sound it is, and how the added height affects doors, cabinets and transitions. We check during your free estimate and tell you plainly whether the old floor should come up.

How long does a residential flooring installation take?

It depends on the size of the project, the product and how much subfloor preparation is needed. A single room is a much shorter job than a whole main level. Your written estimate includes a realistic timeline for your project.

Do I need to move out during installation?

Usually not. We plan the work so you can keep living in the home, and we talk through furniture, appliances and access ahead of time so install days run smoothly.

How much does new flooring cost in Hickory?

As of fall 2026, typical installed prices in the Hickory area are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, subfloor leveling and stairs are listed separately. Your exact number comes from a free on-site measurement and written estimate. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
